Pain in the heel
is one of the most common
complaints that lead to a visit to
podiatrist and orthopedic surgeons.
Heel pain generally falls into two
categories, either pain behind the
heel or pain beneath the heel.
Athletes are most prone to
developing pain in the heel.
Activities such as running or
jumping can put constant strain on
the heel, muscles and ligaments
throughout the foot and ankle. A
person's lifestyle can also
contribute to pain in the heel.
Occupation, obesity and heavily
lifting can cause heel pain.
The most common
cause of pain in the heel is plantar
fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is
caused when the plantar ligament
becomes inflamed due to a strain
that pulls the ligament from where
it attaches to the heel. This causes
a tiny tear in the tissue. With
plantar fascitis, pain usually
occurs early in the morning, on long
walks or from prolonged standing.

Heel spurs is
another cause for pain in the heel.
Heel spurs can form where the
plantar fascia attaches to the heel.
When excessive stress is put on the
plantar fascia ligament a heel spur
can form. Heel spurs are pointed
bone fragments that grow forward
from the heel bone. This can cause
severe pain in the heel as it digs
through the soft tissue to the bone.
Stone Bruising is
another common cause for pain in the
heel. This generally happens when
you step on a rock or stone causing
you to bruise the fat pad on the
underside of your heel. The pain
will usually go away with rest,
however, it can be quite painful
while healing.
As you can see, pain in the heel
can be caused by many things. If
you suffer from heel pain see your
doctor to determine why, and to get
the proper treatment. Most heel pain
can be treated conservatively. Very
rarely, surgery may be required if
other conventional treatments have
failed. But the good news is... you do
